3 Renovation Mistakes You’ll Want to Avoid

renovationThere are so many reasons why you might want to renovate or remodel your home. Sometimes it’s because you have property damage, which makes up 36% of remodeling jobs, or maybe you just think it’s time for an update. Whatever your reasons, there are a few renovation mistakes that you don’t want to make.

Hiring the Cheapest Contractor

Price is absolutely a factor in remodels and renovations, but that doesn’t mean you want to cut corners. When attempting to find the right contractor for the job, have two or three come by to give you an estimate of proposed costs. Be wary of contractors who give you a cheap quote and then install low-grade materials, disregard proper building methods and codes, or even tack on additional costs after the initial estimate. When you’re getting quotes, make sure the contractors give you a thorough list of all proposed work and their related costs, such as materials, labor, permits, waste removal, and more.

Not Giving Yourself Wiggle Room

When it comes to budgeting your home remodeling job, you’ll want to set an appropriate budget. That includes making room for the “what ifs” of the job. Almost always will something unexpected, and un-budgeted for, pop up during the reno and all of a sudden that leads to three more unplanned expenses. So when figuring out your budget, take 15% of the total cost of the project and set it aside for unplanned expenses.

Unwilling to Change Layouts

If your bathroom is configured oddly, don’t think it can’t be fixed with relative ease. Many people are hesitant to change the layout of an awkward bathroom or laundry room because they’re afraid it’ll be too difficult, and therefore too expensive, for them to change. Most reconfiguration isn’t all that hard to do! So if you want it done, bring it up to your contractor for them to give you an estimate.

There are many other renovation mistakes you don’t want to make, but most can be avoided with a professional residential construction company. Take the time to research your chosen contractor in depth, and make sure you like the people you’re hiring as well. They will be in your home, so it’s important you’re comfortable with that.
